Dear Designer,

I want to add some character to my kitchen and thought I would add a backsplash, however, I would like your help about where I can purchase it, how to install and what type to get. I do like the mosaic tiles. My appliances are black and my counter tops are black granite. Thank you, Michelle

Answer:

The last trend in back-splashes was the subway tile look. I never really understood this. I don’t want to eat in a subway station, so why would I want my kitchen to look like one?

I really like the idea of mosaic tiles work – and you can play with sizes and shapes. My favorite look these days combines sizes and shapes in your backsplash to create a unique look for your home. Sizes can be rectangle, square, hexagonal and even circular. With all of the black accents, I would love to see something monochromatic, light in color and with a gloss finish.

Where can I purchase tiles:

River North has the best tile options are right in the neighborhood. It is important to look at the price range as well. I’ve been happy with selections from Ann Sacks to Tile Depot. I suggest shopping around all price points and then narrow down which you like the best. Don’t pass up a store because it is too expensive. And the same on the low end. You might just end up combining tiles from the two.

How do I install tiles?

I know I am not installing the tiles myself. I know a few things to keep in mind. 1) Clean surface. 2) Proper measurements. 3) Start with the focal point. There is a moment when some of the tiles will need to be cut to fit. And then you need it to dry overnight before applying the grout. There are a ton of how-to videos out there as well.

What kind of tiles to get?

It’s not so much which kind to get, but to look at what they can do in your kitchen - You want to select tiles for their durability, washable, resistant to stains, oil grease and water splashes. Tiles range from ceramic, glass and porcelain materials.

The LEEDing idea:

Glass in the cupboards, glass on the walls. Recycled Glass Tiles. Old glass bottles, car windows, beverage bottles and other colorless glass are reclaimed, crushed into small pieces and then hocus-pocused in a special machine to create recycled glass items for your home. This saves landfills from growing into your backyard, keeps the air smelling better from not having to burn the garbage in these landfills and keeps forward thinking artists creative.

Thanks so much and keep the questions coming!
