Let it RAIN…
Downtown – UGH!!! Please stop carrying your boring black umbrella. I get it, you think it matches whatever you’re wearing and blends in. Well, I think just the opposite when it comes to a hand held water-covering device. Have fun with it! I think serious umbrellas are seriously lame. Whenever I get caught in the rain, I duck in somewhere and find the umbrella with the most color and spunk. Not only does its pep up my day, but those who see it coming down the street as well.
Around Town - The more it rains now, the greener and more lush our parks will be. When you stare out your office window this afternoon, dream about how awesome picnics in the park will be. I CAN NOT wait to pull my bike out and ride up to the lake. A little trick I learned a few years back – forgo the heavier towels in exchange for bed’s top sheet. You get more room on the ground, with less bulk in your bag. Top the blanket with friends, food, drinks and games, and you’ve got yourself the perfect Chicago summer day!
Out-of-Town – Miami in the Rain. I know most people love the sun in Miami, and I do too, don’t get me wrong. But when you go there as much as I do, you have to be able to roll with the punches and enjoy the wet as well as the warm. Here’s what you do… Find a place to sit and watch. Whether it is on Ocean, Lincoln or at a hotel you have always wanted to check out, I promise you a great show – either from the people you see or from the amount of drinks you drink.

Eating my words are humbling, but, thank goodness, low in fat
Downtown: Me
A few blogs ago, I dished on West Elm. I want to rephrase where my complaint came from. I am not a fan of on-line shopping. I like to touch the goods and see the construction. So while I am in my office and pecking on-line for items for clients, I know better.
Around Town: West Elm
I was impressed with their new location on the corner of North & Clybourn. I worked with a really knowledgeable sales associate and even ran into other designers checking out the new space.

ART CHICAGO and NEXT
Downtown
I know as an Interior Designer I get over excited about events at the Merchandise Mart and my brain starts thinking of all the possibilities I can create with the furniture. Well, Art Chicago is like my little vacation from thinking and I just get to enjoy the beauty and creativity that comes to us from all over the world. It is truly a treat to be a part of it, even as a patron.
- It runs April 30 – May 3.

Out-of-Town
My best friend/ college roommate/ Art teacher extraordinaire, Rachel Rose, is heading to town for her annual trip with her senior art students from Rochester High School. Every year they load up onto those big, comfy buses (at like 6 in the morning) and drive right to the Merchandise Mart for a full morning at Art Chicago. Weather pending, they sometimes take part of the architectural tour, other times they may squeeze in an additional exhibit, but, no matter what, Rachel always gives them about 2 hours to wander Michigan Avenue and explore the city. How cool is that for these students?

Alternative Transportation (and a little bit on green roofs too)
I love green roofs for a reason most don’t talk about. Mainly because it may seem more complicated to explain than vegetation. It is a term called Heat Island Effect. A heat island is a mass of pavement that bounces the light back into the sky - like a game of ping pong, where each time it travels, more heat is let off as it hits, and then too much warmness is sprayed all around and bad things happen – like the melting of the glaciers and then where do the polar bears get to hang out? So, in response to the Heat Island Effect, we adjust the SRI – Solar Reflectance Index. The SRI can be controlled with cushioning the heat that bounces. And we cushion it with vegetation and green roofs.
This is a long way around talking about cutting down on fuel emissions, which is what I intended this weeks topic to be.
Downtown & Around Town- RLGRI
Turns out, Chicago is the 48th Ward. This meant nothing to me a few minutes ago. As I started researching for Green ideas for public transportation, I came across the RLGRI – Red Line Green Roof Initiative. I am sorry that it is short on funding because it sounds like a great idea to move Chicago forward (no pun intended). Unlike the descriptions above, I don’t think this is hard to comprehend – some awesome people want to put green roofs on top of the standard metal covings the EL stops currently have.
Out-of-Town - Portland, OR
One of the top 25 green cities in America and is cited to have one of the best public transportation systems.
